Go Ask Alice, She's Your Elected Official

The replacement for disgraced ex-New York governor Eliot Spitzer, Governor Paterson, doesn't seem to be a whole lot better than his predecessor.  Already Paterson has admitted to multiple extramarital affairs, including with women he has favored with jobs and used taxpayer money to fund some of his escapades, as well as using pot and cocaine when he was "in his 20s."  Ex-governor Spitzer admitted to drug use in his past and now we have a serious presidential candidate, Barack Obama, who has used cocaine and pot.  Former President Clinton famously "didn't inhale."  Even Republicans can't be relied upon to just say no.  Remember the hubbub over a Reagan-era Supreme Court nominee who doubled as a pothead?  Other pols like Newt Gingrich also admitted to drug use in their college days.

The media and the politicians themselves have brushed these incidents off as youthful indiscretions that shouldn't be any big deal.  Paterson even said that there are many cokeheads like himself that had their fun and now lead productive lives.  Not only has drug use become normalized as some sort of rite of passage, it has become almost a badge of honor, a way for a pol to show his hip bonafides but still reassuring the public he's not mainlining anything now.  Hollywood obliviot George Clooney even stated in a recent interview that he wouldn't vote for someone who hasn't used drugs because it means that person hasn't really lived life.  The cynics say that if we disqualified everyone who had used drugs, we wouldn't have anyone available to run for office.

On behalf of the millions of Americans who have never used drugs, I say, "Bravo Sierra."  Don't get on your "high" horse simply because you had no discipline when someone offered you a joint or a line of white girl.  So sorry I didn't do my part to contribute to the gangbangers and Scarface drug lords who used your drug money to kill people.  Politicians are like showbiz people in one respect and that is they desperately want the approval of their peers.  I suspect that, in addition to the baby boomer generation's loosey-goosey attitude toward drug use, is the real reason why we suddenly have a crop of former druggies in positions of leadership.  You'd think they used to have Young Democrats and Young Republican meetings at Studio 54.

We have Clinton to thank not only for teaching a generation of youth that oral sex isn't really sex, but for pretty much knocking down the bar when it comes to personal behavior and drug use when he jokingly told an audience on MTV that he didn't inhale marijuana in his college days.  It used to be that cocaine use was a political career killer.  Now that seems to be fine too.  What "past" drug use then isn't acceptable now?  Heroin?  LSD?  Ecstasy?  Meth?  Or all of those okay too?  How about someone who crossed the line from recreational user to addict?  After all, our current president is an alcoholic.  Granted, he's been on the wagon a long time but it does make you wonder if one day we'll elect someone who roomed with Courtney Love at Betty Ford for a black tar problem.

I'm not saying one toke of a joint 40 years ago should disqualify you from public office no matter what you've done with your life since then.  But I am concerned that drug use, even of hard drugs and use beyond "experimentation," is quickly being viewed as acceptable.  You do have to take that person's judgment into account.  As Paterson showed, he didn't exactly lead an ethical life even after he supposedly snorted his last line.  You do have to take into account that person's moral authority, because it can impede your ability to lead.  Moreover, it shouldn't be considered shocking or embarrassing or God forbid, "uncool" if you never did use drugs.  Look at the way the media treated former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Worst of all is the example this shows impressionable youth.  A kid may think it no big thing to start trying drugs, because after all, it didn't seem to really affect people like Barack Obama, did it?  And if he doesn't do drugs, then everyone will laugh at him and say that he hasn't really lived life.

Thanks again to The Worst Generation.

Feminism, Call Girls, and Client #9

Alack and alas, Ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer.  Not only was he the Inspector Gervais of Wall Street, throwing around his weight against any and all perceived enemies, he was also a big-time abortion fan.  When he was Attorney General, he tried to go after the crisis pregnancy centers in New York at the behest of the abortion industry.  On the day the news broke about his being Client #9, he was scheduled to speak before pro-abortion advocates.  Thanks to that, he had the support of the feminist establishment.

So the feminists stand by like Mrs. Spitzer at the News Conferences of Shame as their champion falls.  Of course they don't care that Spitzer was essentially exploiting other women to satisfy his greatly inflated ego, just as they didn't care about Bill Clinton exploiting a young albeit randy intern or the accusations of harassment or rape levelled against him.  They think as long as these men give them what they want (abortions), then it doesn't matter what they do.

Prostitution is a yucky business.  Despite the fantasies of "Pretty Woman," hookers with hearts of gold, and so-called sex workers who sell the post-feminist fertilizer known as "empowerment" by exploiting your own sexuality, it's a world of drugs, self-loathing, violence, diseases, crushed dreams, slavery, and in a lot of cases, an early grave due to disease, suicide, overdoses, or murder.  Madams aside, prostitution on a global scale is run by organized crime which is almost entirely dominated by men.

Spitzer's sin of adultery against his wife and the shame he brought upon his family are bad enough.  What adds salt to the wound is that Spitzer, like a lot of successful and powerful men, felt entitled to use another human being--one young enough to be his daughter--for his own selfish ends.  And not just some girl on a dark street corner.  Spitzer demaned exclusivity.  He shopped for "Kristen" on that Emperor's Club website for high-priced call girl the way other rich guys shop for fine cigars or champagne.  The website bills its "stock" as attractive women who seem to have their teeth and are free from track marks.  Moreover they are billed as coming from "good" families (as though girls from good families end up as prostitutes) and being educated.  Spitzer and his ilk were in the market, in other words, for the sort of women who could be their equals without really being their equals.  Got that, NOW?

But all is never as it seems in this shady underworld.  Just as the hot chick in the phone sex ads is never the one talking to you, but rather some middle-aged matron looking to make a few extra bucks, "Kristen" isn't exactly the sort of girl you'd imagine would be worth thousands of dollars.  Attractive, but not a knockout, the real girl behind the persona is a young woman who is obviously looking for fame and attention through the music biz, who left home at a young age due to "abuse," and who admitted to drug use.  In short, she fits every supposed stereotype about a girl who offers her body for sale.  And now her reputation and relationships are irrevocably changed forever.  Just ask Monica Lewinsky.

This is why the feminist establishment holds no credibility for me.  The feminists ought to be working to end prostitution and to hold all public officials accountable for exploiting women regardless of their party affiliation or ideology.

Not holding my breath on that one.

Moment Of Sleaze

The fact that Fox's "game show" Moment of Truth is a hit is yet another sign the Apocalypse must be around the corner.

Unlike the cheesy fun of NBC's Deal Or No Deal or Singing Bee, or the educational Are You Smarter Than A Fifth-Grader?, Moment of Truth turns Jerry Springer drama into a shot at money.  Contestants are asked potentially humiliating, even devastating questions, for dough...all with family, friends, and spouses present.  The contestant must answer truthfully or lose.

As one contestant found out last week, the winnings can come in handy to pay a divorce lawyer, since her turn on the show destroyed her marriage.  She admitted, with her husband present, that she would rather had married an ex-boyfriend than her hubby.  After the show's taping, she dumped her husband.  Fox aired the show anyway.

Despite the left thinking everything affiliated with Rupert Murdoch is a bastion of conservatism, Fox has been producing outrageously sleazy shows like this for years.  It was Fox that gave the world Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire and the FCC-fined Married By America

But the really sad part isn't just that there are people dumb and desperate enough for attention, they are willing to destroy their relationships on national television.  The sad part is there are people watching it.  This is beyond the goofy, almost-staged appeal of daytime talk shows.  This is trying to drag out every conceivable secret out of someone, their worst thoughts.  All Maury Povich wants to know is if you fathered Shaniqua's baby, not if you secretly hate your mother too.

With every hit there are scores of imitators; I shudder to think how t.v. execs are going to try and out-sleaze Moment of Truth.
